Was I born with it- kinky hair vs water

The common misconception about kinky hair is that you must have good hair to make it curly and bouncy.

The reality is most African-American were all born with some type of curl rather its kinky, curly or wavy but it’s some type of curl pattern that we were born with.

This misconception is absolutely incorrect but we most take care of our hair and in return we will have curly bouncy hair. Also, we must accept those kinks and curls that are coming from our scalp.

It took a lot of long hours of watching all types of you tube videos realizing these kinky hair tutorials all have something in common. Whether they’re in the shower rinsing their hair with water and adding product or if they’re standing in front of the mirror misting their hair with lots of water and adding products. I have spent lots of money on products hoping they will help with giving my hair the moisture it needs. Then I realize that the one thing we were taught as an African-American girl is to stay away from water and that is the main ingredient needed to curl and moisturize.

I was taught to stay away from water because at a young age my hair was straight and to keep my hair from reverting back to its natural curl. I was told I needed to stay away from water which means water is the enemy. As an adult I’ve learned that I need to wash my hair more and use lots and lots of water for my hair to maintain a curly look. Water is not the enemy is actually the main thing that I love in my hair now.

Now knowing that when it rains I don’t have to run from the water or when it’s time to shower I don’t have to cover my hair from the water. I actually embrace it and I embrace every kink and curl that I have. Once I did that my hair has been absolutely amazing.

Just another kinky girl problem.

This is my daughters have after moisturizing with a water based moisturizer. The left side is moisturized and the right side is after the hair has been washed and towel dried.

To oil or not to oil

I run into this common problem when it comes to my hair growth. Do I oil my scalp or do I oil my hair or do I simply not oil at all. Another kinky girl problem.

I have tried oil rinsing prior to shampooing and conditioning. ** My oil finishing process consist of heating coconut oil and applying to scalp and hair. Let it sit for 15-30 mins or sometimes overnight just depends on how much time I have. With a plastic bag on top to trap the heat from your head to melt the hair on your scalp and hair strands. Then continue with your normal shampoo and conditioner.

I like this process the most. I do this every week or every two weeks depending on my hair dryness level.

This helps my hair stay moisturized in between washes.

I have also tried to oil my scalp everyday or every other and it felt really greasy and dirty. I had to was it out and tried it again. Just doesn’t work for me.

The oil rinsing process works for me. Also, I have not found another method that works best for me.

Just another kinky hair girl problem.

Raw coconut oil is my kinky girl favorite.

My name is Latrice Ross and I am the Founder and CEO of Juskinksandcurls.

I have always been proud of my natural hair. I love the way it feels after a wash-n-go, how my curls look when I’ve given them the attention they deserve and how many different ways I can wear it. But I also love experimenting with protective styles such as weaves, wigs and braids and love to switch up my look on a whim based on my mood.

In 2010, after watching tons of videos of women unintentionally damaging their own natural hair in an attempt to blend it with exotic textures like “Brazilian”, “Peruvian” & “Malaysian”, I began searching for textures that looked more like my own. I was so ready to say goodbye to that whole “African in the front, Indian in the back” thing.

But my search came up empty.

I found that most hair extension companies carried mostly straight or synthetic curl textures that were not versatile or easy to maintain; not to mention the available textures weren’t so cute either.

So in 2012, I decided to create a company that not only sold high quality, kinky, curly and natural-looking textured hair extensions but one that also celebrates the women who wear it. YOU.
